Publication date: 1884
Number of pages: 120The Apostrophe. The apostrophe is used to denote that a vowel has been dropped before a following vowel; as " a fall' a be " (" tell him ") = "a falla a be"; "a rafarix' um ma" ("I like it") = " a rafaiixi um ma "; " fokh-e m'ai " (" there's no salt in it") = " fokh-e mu ai."
2. The Hyphen (-). The hyphen is used to connect two or three words together; as " bari^i-o-barixi " ("every house"); " birri-o-birri " ("always"); " ki-o-ki" (" anyhow "). It is also used to divide a syllable with kh- from the vowel that follows,—as " nakh-a" (sign of the past tense), " sekh-e " (" grass "), " mikh-i " (" a person"), "mokh-o'N ("to touch"), "sukh-u" (" to hold "); to divide a syllable ending with n from the vowel following it,—as " son-e " (" an alligator"); and to separate the final syllable nya from the vowels preceding it; showing, in the three last cases, where one syllable ends and where another begins. It is also used when a diphthong is followed by a vowel; as " wai-en " (" speak ").
